Vacant East Hollywood Home Catches Fire Again, Sparking Safety Concerns
A vacant craftsman-style home in East Hollywood caught fire again early Friday morning, marking at least the third time in recent months that the property has been engulfed in flames. The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. on W. Melrose Avenue, and firefighters arrived to find the two-story house heavily engulfed in flames, with large plumes of black smoke rising into the sky. The Los Angeles Fire Department battled the fire for nearly an hour before bringing it under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has raised concerns among city leaders and nearby residents, who are worried about the growing safety hazards posed by the property.
The home, which has become a persistent nuisance in the community, has been a focal point for city officials. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety had previously flagged the property as a “nuisance” due to ongoing issues with unauthorized individuals using the site. Officials have pointed to the presence of vagrants, vandals, and even gang activity on the property, which also features a detached garage. The property has reportedly been repeatedly breached, leading to security concerns and an escalating risk of fires. The department plans to discuss further actions, including potential abatement, at their next scheduled meeting.
The home’s history adds to the growing concerns. Originally known as the Melrose Inn, the property went through foreclosure before being acquired by its current owner, a limited liability company, about a year ago. Prior to this, the former owner claimed that personal issues led to the sale. While attempts to contact the current owner have been unsuccessful, city leaders are focusing on addressing the property’s ongoing safety issues, hoping to prevent further incidents that could endanger the community.
